Talking About the History of Golf   by Henry

Golf has been one of the most popular games worldwide, in my opinion, simply due to the three reasons. First, getting exercise from walking. The second, improving your concentration. The third, it’s a friendly game to enhance your social Relationship. Because of this, more and more business men enjoy this game.
But, can you tell the history of the golf? I bet most of the weekend golfer, even pro golfer, can’t give the answer. In fact, there is still some disagreement over the ancient roots of the game of golf.
A debate has raged on as to were the game was invented was it by the Chinese, the Dutch, or the Scottish. A game somewhat similar to golf was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records which is a Chinese book of the Eleventh Century. It was also mentioned in the year 1297 in the Netherlands where the Dutch played a game with a stick and a leather ball. Whoever hit the ball in a target several hundreds of meters away the least number of times, won.
But, Scotland is generally considered as the birthplace of the game, as it is played today. This claim is due in large part to a number of specific historical references dating as far back as the mid 1400s. The most commonly cited of these references is a written record that a games called either geoff, gowf or gawd , this is a hard game was played during the reign of James II of Scotland. In 1457 King James proclaimed by royal decree that the playing of fluteball : and gowf” were forbidden so that the men of Scotland could concentrate on their archery practice. Thus the pursuit of golf remained outlawed until the signing of the Treaty of Glasgow in the year of ‘1501 m which brought peace between the warring parties. At this point even Scotland James IV took up the game of golf himself. A long relationship between golf and royalty ensued although both commoners and gentry alike frowned upon Mary Queen of Scots when, in 1567 was found to be playing golf just days after the death of her husband Darney.
While in fact, It really doesn’t matter who actually invented the game, but what does matter is how the history of golf has evolved over the years. Golf courses have not always had eighteen holes. St. Andrews began with eleven holes dictated by the topography of the land the course was located on. Players would play the eleven holes out and then back in to total 22 holes. Later, several of the holes were deemed too short and were combined with each other. That reduced the number from 11 down to 9 so a complete round of golf was comprised of 18 holes.
By 1744, the game of golf had become wildly popular. So much so that a group of men called Gentlemen Golfers decided that a set of rules must be laid out for fair play. They came up with a list of thirteen guidelines on playing the game.
Major changes since the 19th century have occurred in the equipment needed for play. Better mowers made greens easier to play on. Golf balls designs would evolve by using rubber and man-made materials which made the ball fly longer on a drive. The wooden golf tee would make the drive easier.
No discussion of golf history would be complete without talking about the advances made in golf clubs. Metal shafts came about in the 1930s and most drivers were made of wood which is why they are called woods today even though they are most commonly made these days of metal or titanium. The golf shaft design has also gravitated towards graphite which is lighter and makes the club easier to swing.
When referring to the history of golf, we can debate exactly where the game originated, but the game of golf as we know it today, most certainly came about in Scotland. Even if we’re wrong, we do still have this wonderful game and most of us are very glad about that!

“Although now an Anglican priest and head of one of the prestigious colleges in Cambridge University, John Polkinghorne has spent most of his adult life working as a theoretical physicist. He is therefore uniquely qualified to set forth the relationship between science and religion in a way that takes the two disciplines seriously. Professor Polkinghorne argues that the habits of thought that are natural to the scientist are the same habits of thought that can be followed in the search for a wider and deeper kind of truth about the world. He calls this “bottom-up” thinking, that is, starting not with general principles but with the particularity of experience, and asking what is sufficient to explain the phenomena and give an understanding of what is going on. Serious Talk begins with the search for an acceptable meeting point for science and religion. Following this are examinations of specific theological issues approached in the spirit of such a meeting point: creation, the role of chance, God’s engagement with time, the anticipation of a destiny awaiting humanity beyond death, and the end of the universe.”

“C. Christine Battle lacked strong guidance as a child and greatly suffered the consequences during much of her life. Yet, through it all, (the word ‘though’ has been removed here) she always had a place in her heart for the Lord. He knew she had the power of the written word inside her, yet He did not allow her gift to shine through until she decided to seek Him first, above all else.>Magnifying Blood Talk is a collection of God-inspired poetry. Christine’s poetry does not only inspire; it opens your eyes to the bigger picture. In so doing, you will clearly understand what is happening around you and why. For example, in “No Longer Desire,” Christine realizes that seeking worldly fortunes will only lead to devastation, and the risks of being content with a sinful society are explored in “Anger’s Danger.”> Through her words, C. Christine Battle hopes to accomplish three things: to lead you toward beginning and maintaining a relationship with the Lord; to teach you to seek God first in order to live life to the fullest; and finally, to indulge in love and forgiveness among ourselves here on earth. It is very possible to find a light in the darkness, no matter what the circumstances. It is time to learn, praise, and encourage as one body, united under God.”

Leaving the Enchanted Forest: The Path from Relationship Addiction to Intimacy

Leaving the Enchanted Forest: The Path from Relationship Addiction to Intimacy

“Chapter One>The Love Potion: Chemistryand Dependence>On a recent TV talk show, the hostess asked about relationship addiction. She had heard the term a lot lately, she said, but was still puzzled. She asked, ‘Just what is relationship addiction? What does it really look like? Is it like any other addiction?” Her guest replied, “Well, it can show up in any number of ways: as an obsession, for example — a constant thinking, ruminating about the person you’re in relationship with. Or there may be a compulsive quality about the behavior — for instance, making frequent detours just to drive or walk by the partner’s workplace. There may also be signs of tolerance increase. In the relationship addict’s case, this translates into needing more and more of the other person’s presence to feel OK.>”There is a need to protect the supply, which shows up as an unreasonable degree of possessiveness or jealousy. And there may be symptoms of withdrawal. When the relationship addict is separated from the I source, ‘ he or she may become anxious and depressed.” “Hmm…,” mused the show’s hostess with a frown. “Sounds to me like you’re describing love “>Although we have been socialized to think of this obsession as love, in fact, the compelling allure of its spell has little to do with the depth and enduring quality of true caring. Addiction to another person is what “falling in love” feels like-it is the wild abandon of the enchanted forest. The crucial distinction between relationship addicts and other people who fall in love is that the former expect this fleeting phase of a relationship to become a utopian endless summer that sustains forever the poetry, the ecstasy, and the feelings ofmerger they experience in their infatuation. Not only have women been socialized to nurture and take care of men in relationship, but they-in particular-have believed the myth of romance.>As women, we have accepted the notion that if only we find the right person, we’ll fall in love and live happily every after-as fairy tales promise. Given this stage setting, it is not surprising that even women who are not relationship addicts show many signs of dependence. But obsessions, compulsions, and the temporary high of being “in love” are neither love nor proof of love; on the contrary, they are the signposts of falling in love-that tempting ecstatic feeling that can so easily lead to dependence and addiction.>Maria>At thirty-three, Maria has been a relationship addict most of her adult life. When she met Vic, Maria thought she had met her soulmate, a reallife version of the fairy tale prince: tall, dark, handsome, socially prominent, charming, and somewhat mysterious. Maria instantly fell for him. Within a few months they were married; like Tristan and Iseult, however, they did not live happily ever after.>When she fell in love with Vic, Maria misread some very important clues about him. She saw a superior man who was exciting, outgoing, friendly, and entertaining, but she saw him on

Johannine Discipleship as a Covenant Relationship

$30

“Rekha Chennattu breaks new ground in Johannine scholarship–and offers a first-class study of Old Testament covenant theology. Presenting a detailed exegetical analysis of the discipleship narratives and discourses in John’s gospel, she gleans further insight through her investigation into Old Testament discipleship motifs. While not ignoring Hellenistic influence and the presence of the Samaritan and Greek Christians in the community, Chennattu sets the Johannine community firmly within the Jewish world. Opening a new chapter in Johannine studies, she concludes that, according to the Gospel of John, the relationship with God that had defined Israel as a people of God also defines the disciples of Jesus.”

Talk to the Hand

Talk to the Hand

$5.99

A battle-cry for civilized behavior from the author of the multi-million selling Eats, Shoots and Leaves. “Talk to the hand ’cause the face ain’t listening,” the saying goes. When did the world get to be so rude? When did society become so inconsiderate? It’s a topic that has been simmering for years, and Lynne Truss says that it has now reached boiling point. Taking on the boorish behavior that has become a point of pride for some, Talk to the Hand is a rallying cry for courtesy. Like Eats, Shoots and Leaves, Talk to the Hand is a spirited conversation, not a stuffy guidebook. Why hasn’t your nephew ever thanked you for that perfect Christmas present? What makes your builder think he can treat you like dirt in your own home? When you phone a utility with a complaint (and have negotiated the switchboard), why can’t you ever speak to a person who is authorized to apologize? What accounts for the appalling treatment you receive in shops? Most important, what will it take to roll back a culture that applauds rudeness and finds it so amusing? For anyone who’s fed up with the brutality inflicted by modern manners (and is naturally too scared to confront the actual yobs), Talk to the Hand is a colorful call to arms from the wittiest defender of the civilized world.

Talk About It

Talk About It

$7.99

“>Talk About It>, the sophomore album from Nicole C. Mullen, showcases the musical versatility of this energetic artist. The ballads segue to pop, then urban grooves, with the common denominator being the theme in the lyrics. Whether you listen to the ballads or the up-tempo beats, the word “call” is used consistently, tying into the album’s theme of taking to and calling on the Lord. It is Nicole’s desire that >Talk About It> inspires hope and dialouge about our life situations, struggles, triumphs, similarities and differences. Untimately when we call on Jesus “all things become possible because we operate in His power and not our own.” > >”

An Intimate One-On-One Relationship

An Intimate One-On-One Relationship

$14.99

“Many of us may believe connecting to the earth and universe can bring a form of “peace,” hard work: “success,” and treating ourselves and others well can bring us “happiness.” But how do we receive “joy”? Happiness depends on what’s happening outside of us, such as materialistic achievements and how people treat us. Joy is what we have despite what’s happening around us — a special gift received from being in an intimate relationship with our Triune Creator…The best of us miss the mark and, at least, emulate sin in thoughts. How we treat others, including ourselves, knowingly and unknowingly, is also a factor. How then do we enter into the presence of the Holy One — our Creator? The significant question every human being from all religions and thoughts should now ask is: “How do I get freedom from the consequences of missing the mark (sin)? How does our Creator solves this challenge for us?”Matthew 16:13-17 NKJV When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”The same two questions remain for us also: Who does everyone else say Yeshua Christ is? Who do you say He is? Your answer to the latter is the most important answer of your lifetime.”

Table Talk

Table Talk

$15.99

“Martin Luther’s Table Talk is a compendium of excerpts taken from conversations with his students and colleagues, who furiously scribbled notes as he spoke. Reading them, it’s easy to imagine all of them sitting around the table, eating and drinking and discussing issues of great concern to reformists. These excerpts are frequently anecdotal, highly opinionated, sometimes sublime, sometimes unsophisticated, occasionally brutal… and always unequivocating. Right or wrong, Luther has his say.”

Walking with God: Talk to Him. Hear from Him. Really.

$15.99

“>”This is a series of stories of what it looks like to walk with God, over the course of about a year.” So begins a remarkable narrative of one man’s journey learning to hear the voice of God. In Walking with God by John Eldredge, the details are intimate and personal. The invitation is for us all. What if we could hear from God . . . often? What difference would it make? All day long we are making choices. It adds up to an enormous amount of decisions in a lifetime. How do we know what to do? We have two options. We can trudge through on our own, doing our best to figure it all out. Or, we can walk with God. As in, learn to hear his voice. Really. We can live life with God. He offers to speak to us and guide us. Every day. It is an incredible offer. To accept that offer is to enter into an adventure filled with joy and risk, transformation and breakthrough. And more clarity than we ever thought possible. >Take a journey into the heart of God and discover the comforting intimacy Christians crave in their daily lives. In “Walking with God” John Eldredge takes you through a year in his life, showing what an intimate relationship with God looks like day to day, teaching you how our deepest longings could all find sufficient fulfillment in God’s company. In this companion workbook, John goes even further, engaging you in deeper studies, showing you how to make decisions aligning with God’s will and find solutions to the barriers that keep you from the life God intends. Here he provides the weapons for the spiritual battles for your own heart and for others.”

Understanding People : Deep Longings For Relationship

Understanding People : Deep Longings For Relationship

$18.99

“”My burden in this book is to lay a foundation for accepting the simple (but rather radical) idea that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life without falling into shallowness or irrelevance. To reach that goal, it is necessary to see how psychological disorder is really the product of the sinful pursuit of life apart from God.” “Let me try to reduce this profound longing for relationship to a simple definition: Each of us fervently wants someone to see us exactly as we are, warts and all, and still accept us. Because no other human being can ever see all of us, a nagging doubt clouds even the best relationship: what would they think of me if they knew that . . .?” “We must relieve ourselves of the pressure to ‘feel good’ when something legitimately painful happens. Hurting Christians must embrace their pain, not deny it out of guilt. Bereaved people should sorrow. Parents whose children rebel should ache. Wives whose husbands are weak should feel disappointed and angry. Children whose parents provide authority without involvement should feel betrayed . . . Every emotion can be used to push us on to a deeper awareness of our dependency on God.” “People who are designed to know the joy of relationship feel only the pain of separation and loneliness.”"

Relationship 911: The Hidden Vessel Within

Relationship 911: The Hidden Vessel Within

$10.99

“Life is all about relationships. Many are suffering from hurt?physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Even through the twists and turns that life may bring, you will not be the only one who will experience the distress of disappointments, fear, anger, depression or resentment; but what allows you to be different is your reaction to the issue at hand. Most often, a quick fix in relationships will keep you looking for love in all the wrong places. For this reason, Ruby Fleurcius explores the seemingly complicated connection between body, mind, spirit and soul, and helps readers discover the balance needed to fill the void that can only be filled by a relationship with God. Relationship 911: The Hidden Vessel Within will help you discover a life of love, peace, and true balance.”
